There are companies that have a history; and then there are companies that are historic. In the case of Lawrence & Mayo, the latter is a fitting introduction. Established in 1877, Lawrence & Mayo has carved a niche for itself as India’s leading manufacturing and dispensing optician with diversification in scientific and industrial instrumentation. To say that anyone from our grandparents’ generation, to us and our children today have Lawrence & Mayo in common, is a fact. But it’s a fact that’s a glorious reminder of the tenacity, history and the shining present of the company.  

Lawrence and Mayo traces its roots to two London based Jewish families, that of Lawrence and Mayo. The two families set up operations all over the world, including London, Cairo, Spain, Portugal, Indian subcontinent, Colombo, Rangoon and Singapore. High-grade Opticians and makers of best quality Survey, Scientific and Meteorological instruments; Lawrence & Mayo has made a rich contribution in India too. 

It was way back in 1877, when Lawrence & Mayo made their foray in India with a showroom in Calcutta. By 1925, Lawrence & Mayo, headquartered in New Oxford Street, London, boasted of showrooms in Alexandria, Bombay, Cairo, Calcutta (Kolkata), Delhi, Lucknow, Madras (Chennai), Rangoon and Simla. By the 117th year of their operations, the company had established its firm presence in 11 cities with 17 showrooms and millions of satisfied customers. 

Crucially Lawrence & Mayo’s Instruments & Scientific Instrumentation Division also has a major impact on the industry. This division is an integral part of the L&M house since its inception in 1877. The division is at the forefront in providing state-of-the-art Scientific and Engineering instruments and has tie-ups with international companies for their wide range of instruments. It provides Geometric and Engineering Instruments, general Laboratory Instruments and accessories. The company supplies these instruments to Railways, Collieries, Oil Industry, Universities, Quality Control and Research Laboratories. L&M is one of the biggest importers of these instruments and understands the market well.

But the company’s tremendous history also adds to the large contributions and innovations that they have introduced over the many decades of their existence. Aside from being the opticians of choice to the British empire, Lawrence & Mayo has served India in a dedicated manner. With regular firsts to its credit, such as the introduction of contact-lenses in the Indian market in 1975, Lawrence & Mayo earned the distinction of being the most experienced and trustworthy quality opticians. 

It was they who introduced Computerized Eye-Testing way back in 1988. And with the strategic & rapid expansion of their network, with key branches such as the one in Coimbatore added in 2001, Lawrence & Mayo continues to be at the very forefront of ophthalmology in India.
